Dyar is a native of Alabama and is a graduate of Auburn University with a bachelor's degree in agricultural education and a minor in animal science.

After graduation he was an assistant county Extension agent in Lee County, Ala. He was responsible for both adult and junior livestock programs in the county.

In 1977 Dyar earned his master's degree from Western Kentucky University and became farm manager at Debter Hereford Farm in Alabama. He joined the American Angus Association staff in the fall of 1978.
