A native of Georgia, Gazda earned a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics from the University of Georgia. While in college he was a member of the livestock judging team and various organizations in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.

Gazda continued his education by taking additional courses toward his master's degree at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas, where he served as assistant Livestock Judging Team coach and manager of both the school's beef cattle center and the center for forage developed bulls.

Gazda and his wife, Carolyn, reside outside Athens where they maintain a herd of registered Angus cows with their daughters Katie and Taylor, who are both active in the 4-H livestock program and athletics.

Gazda joined the Association staff in 1988.
