A native of central Illinois, Cassady grew up on his family's grain and livestock farm. As a youth he was active in 4-H and FFA, showing cattle on both the state and national levels.

He received a bachelor's degree in animal science from Illinois State University then earned a master's degree in animal science from Southern Illinois University. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity.

Following graduation Cassady was an instructor at Joliet Junior College where he taught the animal science program and coached the livestock and meats judging teams. Cassady joined the staff of the American Angus Association in the spring of 1992.
