A native of Washington, Wesselman grew up on his family's wheat and commercial cattle operation.

He graduated with a bachelor's degree in general agriculture with a minor in animal science and an emphasis in livestock management, marketing, production and policy from Washington State University. In college he was a member of Block & Bridle and the Rodeo Production Committee. He also worked on the Land Grant Days Committee.

After graduation he worked on an Angus ranch in Washington then traveled in Australia for six months, learning about Australian cattle production and marketing. He worked as a territory manager for Walco International before joining the Quincy, Wash., Livestock Market as assistant manager/fieldman. Prior to becoming a regional manager in 1992, Wesselman worked for the Shasta Livestock Auction/Western Video Market in California.
